Things to consider when designing kitchen cabinetry...
When planning your kitchen cabinet layout there is so much to consider. This is one of the major important factors that will affect your everyday life. Help from an experienced kitchen designer is always worth it.
How will the flow work for me and my family?
Depending on how many people work in the kitchen at once. How much space you have to work with, and where existing plumbing / electrical is may all come into play. A great guide is to allow a minimum 36” and preferably 40” space for movement in all areas. Appliances should be spaced apart from one another and never installed against a wall when possible.
Does It Fit My Budget?
Cost in most cases can play into the overall design as well. Drawers typically cost more than doors. Melamine interiors cost less than plywood boxes. Glass doors are more than solid doors as a rule. These are places you and your designer can decide where to spend and where to save.
Will the design I create mean I need seams on my countertops?
Before pulling the trigger on any design we suggest considering the size of the countertop slab you have selected and confirming if you will need any seams? If so how many and where they would go? It can be a shock if not considered in advance that a huge island may need a seam if larger than slab size or cannot be safely brought on-site in one piece.
Wood cabinet stained doors vs MDF painted finish?
This is a whole blog post on it’s own… The end look and style will play into this decision in most cases. Solid wood stained doors can always be refinished later down the road if need be. Painted finishes cannot and can only be touched up if chipped.
Cabinet lighting:
Lighting can have a huge impact on the esthetics of your kitchen. Under cabinet lighting adds ambience to any room. Lighting inside glass cabinets gives you a place to showcase any fancier glass wear or dishes you would like to showcase.
What do I use everyday in my Kitchen?
This is the fun part where you can add in all the needed storage accessories to make everything organized and easy to access. Some of the common add-on’s in a kitchen are: Pull out garbage and recycling centers. Pull out spice rack or spice drawers. Corner lazy-Susan or blind corner pull outs to maximize storage. Cutlery trays and tip out sink drawers. These are just a few to consider.
How Much Maintenance Can I Commit to?
Certain cabinetry doors styles with detail will need more time and attention when cleaning. Certain countertop stones will require more care and maintenance. If your cabinets are ceiling height how will you access the top shelves? Your lifestyle can impact these decisions.
